The documents found below include socioeconomic profiles of each municipal planning area (MPA). These profiles summarize and interpret information that plays a vital role in analyzing the future of each city and town: population, employment, housing and type and availability of land for future commercial and residential development.

Region Overview

The MAG region is defined in several ways:

  • The metropolitan planning organization (MPO) area;
  • The Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA); and
  • Maricopa County

As an MPO the area includes twenty-seven (27) incorporated cities, three (3) American Indian Communities, and three (3) counties (all of Maricopa county and parts of Pinal and Yavapai counties).  The map on the left side of this page depicts the current MPO boundary.


As of July 1, 2013, the population of Maricopa County was approximately 3.9 million, with a projected population of 6.2 million by 2040.

In 2010 the population in Arizona was 6,392,017.  Nearly 60% of the state's population reside in Maricopa County.  According to the 2010 Census, of the 3,817,117 people residing within the county, 58.7% are non-hispanic white, 29.6% are hispanic, and 4.6% are non-hispanic black.
